Game, set and match for Nintendo

The video game console maker closes in on Sony in market value as the Wii outsells PlayStation 3 consoles.

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Nintendo Co. Ltd. shot past Panasonic maker Matsushita in market value on Wednesday and closed in on Sony Corp. as investors watched it unseat Sony as unrivalled king of the game industry.

Nintendo's (Charts) Wii has been outselling Sony's (Charts) PlayStation 3 game console 3-1 in Japan and more than 2-1 in the United States so far this year, according to game magazine publisher Enterbrain and research firm NPD.

Demand for its DS handheld game players also far outstripped that for Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP).

Nintendo shares closed up 1.4 percent at 44,500 yen, increasing its market capitalization to 6.30 trillion yen ($51 billion).

That compares with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.'s (Charts) 6.23 trillion yen and 6.64 trillion yen for Sony - the world's largest and second-largest consumer electronics makers, each having sales more than eight times as big as Nintendo's.

"Nintendo is a market leader in everything it does now, which is basically the handheld as well as console gaming market. We haven't seen Nintendo being a market leader in both products for over a decade," said KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide.

Shares in Nintendo, known for such game characters as Mario, Donkey Kong and Pokemon, have been on an uptrend over the past two years, driven initially by strong sales of its DS handheld players, and recently by growing popularity of the Wii console.

Wii outsells PlayStation 3 by 5 to 1 in Japan
Nintendo launched the Wii in November. The device features a motion-sensitive controller that allows users to direct on-screen play by swinging it like a tennis racket or wielding it like a sword, opening a new avenue of game playing.

Sony also started selling its PlayStation 3 late last year, but it has seen slow demand so far due to its high price tag and limited availability of attractive software titles.

"One thing about Nintendo is that it has killer products and they represent a big portion of its overall business, offering investors a very clear reason to buy," said Mitsushige Akino, chief fund manager at Ichiyoshi Investment Management.

"I think Nintendo is bound to overtake Sony [in market capitalization]."

Shares in Sony have gained 72 percent during the past two years, outperforming the benchmark Nikkei average's 59 percent rise. But the performance is outshone by Nintendo shares, which jumped nearly four-fold over the same period. Matsushita shares have put on 52 percent.

Microsoft agrees to change Vista

In response to Google complaint, software giant will make it easier for Windows users to run desktop search programs.

CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp. has agreed to modify its Windows Vista operating system in response to a complaint that its computer search function put Google Inc. and other potential rivals at a disadvantage, the Justice Department and Microsoft said on Tuesday.

Under an agreement with the department and 17 state attorneys general and the District of Columbia, Microsoft (Charts, Fortune 500) will build into Vista an option to let users select a default desktop search program on personal computers running Windows.

The function, known as "Instant Search," allows Windows users to enter a search query and get a list of results from their hard drive that contain the search term.

The agreement was made public as part of a joint report that the Justice Department and Microsoft filed late on Tuesday with the court overseeing Microsoft's compliance with a 2002 antitrust consent decree.

As part of the deal, a Microsoft official said the company also had pledged to place links inside the Internet Explorer window and the "Start" navigation menu to make it easier for people to access that default desktop search service.

The changes will be introduced in a service pack, or updated version of Windows Vista software. Microsoft said it anticipates a test version of the Vista Service Pack 1 to be ready by the year-end.

Under the agreement, Microsoft also promised to provide additional technical information to third-party developers, such as Google (Charts, Fortune 500), in order to optimize the performance of their desktop search service on Vista.

"These remedies are a step in the right direction, but they should be improved further to give consumers greater access to alternate desktop search providers," David Drummond, Google's chief legal officer, said in a statement.

The changes stem from a complaint Google filed with the Justice Department in December, in which it argued that a feature built into Vista that allows users to search a computer's hard drive did not leave room for competition from other desktop search applications.

Google said the feature violated the consent decree that monitors Microsoft's conduct as part of its settlement with the government.

"We are pleased that as a result of Google's request that the consent decree be enforced, the Department of Justice and state Attorneys General have required Microsoft to make changes to Vista," Drummond said.

The agreement is expected to be presented to the judge monitoring the consent decree, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, at a June 26 court hearing.

The Microsoft consent decree, which settled the government's landmark antitrust case against the company, is scheduled to expire in November. However, some provisions have been extended to November 2009.

Microsoft has called Google's complaint "baseless" and said it was in compliance with the antitrust settlement.

1. Describe my chatting experiences with my peers.
In nowadays, most people have the experience about net play. Internet chatting a new way of communication is followed by the internet exploration. Even internet chatting may become a part of some people's lives, like me, I can use the MSN to chat my friends everyday. MSN is the most popular system people use in Taiwan that belongs to the word internet chatting. MSN can be used everywhere in the world and by just downloading the program for free. It is without charge for people to send the files unconcerned with place, time, and money. Somebody maybe can not often meet, so the chatting by the internet is the convenient method to make contact with the friends. There are some advantages and disadvantages about it. In my suggestion, the advantages are internet chatting saves time and money, and it works everywhere in the world by the internet access. Because of the cheapness, convenience and common, you can see that people use the computer to chatting or the other things everywhere. For instance, my friend lives in Kaohsiung, if I visit him to go to Kaohsiung; I maybe spend my time and money so much. However, if I use the internet chatting by the computer, I can chat with my friend everyday. By the contrast, the disadvantages of internet chatting are the time problem and the eyesight problem. The time problem means to people who spend too much time on chatting. There is a serious problem in young adults. They spend too much time on internet chatting with their friends, and some of them may want to know more people to show their personal web places. I spend my time more than two hours to chat with my friends everyday, and I have my personal web places, my friends can come to visit my place and to leave a message in my place. The eyesight problem is looking at computer for too long causes the sight problem. Therefore, most of people wear the glasses or contact lenses. By developing of technology, even though internet access brings many convent ways for people to use, there are many problems caused by it as well. The internet chatting is the popular method to communicate with friends. Everyone has the different life, live in different areas, so I think the invention of the internet chatting is important and convenient. I like to use the internet to chatting with my friends.
2. Describe my blog and blogging experiences.
My blog name is Angel House. I think the blog should have the personal style. It's a pity I did not report my blog because the teacher does not have time in the class. I find many source material of art, like many angel pictures and angel wings picture. I use many HTML in my blog. Opening my blog web, you can see one of a welcome button, listen to the music, and see many of the feathers fall down from above. I change the background to blue gradient colors, because I like the blue color so much. You can see the little angel picture following the mouse and have the little clock in the left side. In my introduction, you can see my picture and my introduction article. The article can rise up from the under page. Then you can see the English-English and English-Chinese online Dictionary, there are 10 online dictionary links in the blog. I put the girl of the pencil drawing by myself in this article. Next list is the ESL English Learning websites. There are five websites about English learning websites. It is HTML to announce by myself. I like to use the HTML to decorate my blog. You can go to this article to edit area; you can see many kinds of the HTML in there. I put the MTV that is my most favorite is Brian McKnight - Back at One. You can see the lyrics of this song under the MTV. Next list is movie and music. I use the HTML, when you open my blog web, you can listen to this song, and This English song is one of my favorite songs- Duncan James-Frequency. The movie is “The Click”. I use the URL link to the yahoo movie web. You also see the lyrics of this song and the introduction of the movie under the movie link. I put the picture of my niece. With me, she is my angel. Next list is the news, teacher ask us to speak these two articles and sound recording with our voice. Listen to our voice repeat; you can compare the difference of the sound with other people. There is the JCloze in my blog. It’s a kind of the English learning games. Next list is the reviewing websites which is the five ESL English learning websites choose three of them, and then described the three of the advantages and disadvantages about the three websites. Next list is the chat room. I chatted with my classmates, and pasted what we chatting on my blog. Lastly, I put the big angel picture in above. Do you feel the angel around your side? When you close my blog web, you also can see the thanks button. This is the first all English blog with me. Therefore, I can learn English so much in my blog. There are the ESL English learning websites, I can learn English by them, and there are ten online dictionaries in my blog, too. If I have some vocabularies that I do not understand, I can use them to check out the meanings. When I create my blog, I think what I want. I do not like the basic types of the blog, so I look for the various of the source material. I learn to change my blog style in the yahoo knowledge. That spend my time a lot, but I think I study the things so much. No matter in English or in HTML of the computer, I think I gain the many things in this class. I like this class so much, and thanks for your teaching.

All Group A games are being played in Japan.The top two teams will advance to the second round in Anaheim, Calif., where they will face the top two teams from Group B, which includes the United States, Canada, Mexico and South Africa.

Article A. 4 in 10 women report abuse by partner

More than 40 percent of women surveyed in the Seattle area reported they had been physically or psychologically abused by their husbands, dates or boyfriends, researchers said on Wednesday. And a second study showed that women who have been slapped, kicked or otherwise abused were four times more likely to report severe depressive symptoms and three times more likely to report fair or poor health. The researchers, who say their study is a snapshot but suggests a national trend, were surprised at the numbers. For their study, Thompson and colleagues interviewed a random sample of more than 3,400 women members of a Seattle health maintenance organization. The studies, funded by the U.S. federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, mesh with previous estimates that show anywhere between 25 to 50 percent of women may have experienced abuse.
